The issue of immigration is one of the foremost challenges facing the State of Texas, the nation as a whole and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and Mr. Gonzales will speak on the issue of “Immigration, National Security, and the Economy”.
Born in San Antonio and raised in Houston, Gonzales graduated from Texas public schools and served in the United States Air Force. He attended the United States Air Force Academy, and graduated from Rice University and Harvard Law School. Gonzales was a partner at the Houston law firm of Vinson & Elkins prior to serving as General Counsel to the Governor of Texas, Texas Secretary of State, and a Justice on the Supreme Court of Texas. He served as White House Counsel to President George W. Bush prior to serving as Attorney General of the United States.
His work in the Hispanic community and his achievements as a role model have earned him recognition as Hispanic American of the Year by HISPANIC Magazine and one of The 25 Most Influential Hispanics in America by TIME Magazine. The National Hispanic Bar Association honored him as the Latino Lawyer of the Year. Gonzales was honored as a distinguished graduate of Rice University and received the Harvard Law School Association Award from the Harvard Law School Association.
Judge Gonzales is a Visiting Professor at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. He also provides consulting, arbitration, and mediation services from his office in Austin.
The Chairman of the Texas House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security & Public Safety, Representative Sid Miller of Stephenville, Texas will introduce the former Attorney General.
