by: AEC
In the first of what will be a series of "Presidential Candidate Events", the Austin Economic Club is pleased to present Gov. Mitt Romney. As Governor of one of the nation's most liberal states, Governor Romney based his agenda on proven conservative principles: smaller government, lower taxes, defending the traditional family, and keeping our citizens safe and secure.
Scott Reed, a Republican strategist who is not affiliated with a 2008 campaign, said of Romney's just released fund raising report, Romney "cemented his position as a first-tier candidate." "This reinforces the notion that he can go the distance," Reed said.
As campaigns release their first meaningful fundraising figures in what appears certain to become the most expensive presidential campaign in history, Sen. John McCain posted a $12.5 million total, and former New York mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani reported taking in $15 million in the first quarter. Among Democrats, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) has set the pace for the field so far, reporting $26 million raised in combined primary & general election funds. Former North Carolina Senator John Edwards has raised $14 million. Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois has so far declined to release figures for his campaign. The totals of the major contenders easily surpassed the previous record of $8.9 million raised by Al Gore in the first three months of 1999.
